Kids and Dogs

My husband and I have two dogs. Every time my nephew comes over he is scared of the dogs. The dogs will follow him around out of curiosity and watch him. But he just gets scared. The dogs will even lay down and let other kids beat on them and pull ears. Why is my nephew so scared? Anything I can do to help ease him around the dogs?

How old is your nephew? How big are the dogs? Size of each has a lot to do with the fear. Most dogs move quickly, abruptly, lick a lot, jump up on people sometimes, sniff around, and are definitely not shy! All of those behaviors can be intimidating for a young child. If you can give me the answers to the questions, I can give you some tips to help him be more comfortable. :-)

I think it's a kids-with-no-dogs thing. Our son doesn't have a dog, maybe a rabbit soon, but he recently has overcome his fear of dogs. For a while i thought the same thing - why is my son such a scaredy-cat (no pun intended). But after spending more and more time with dogs - he soon discovered there is nothing to be afraid of and will probably sit on your dog given the chance.
