Grocery Store Visits

While you may dread the idea of grocery shopping, especially close to the holidays, your preschooler will see it as a great adventure! Take the opportunity to talk with your child about the many shapes, sizes, colors and smells in the store. Use each grocery store visit to add new vocabulary words and to practice previously learned words. Have your child count oranges or apples while they place them in a bag. In the kitchen, allow your preschooler to help with meal preparation by pouring ingredients, mashing potatoes, cracking eggs, rolling out cookie dough, building meatballs, spreading frosting and setting the table. Assemble all the ingredients and while your child closes their eyes, hide an item and see if she can guess what is missing. Cooking with your preschooler may involve a little more mess, but it is more fun and a great opportunity to practice fine motor skills, eye hand coordination and sequential directions.
