The best way to make reading aloud a memorable routine is to read wonderful books, and the most wonderful books are those that entertain you as well as your child, especially if you are reading these books again and again!
“The single most important activity for building the knowledge required for eventual success in reading is reading aloud to children.” (The National Academy of Education, Becoming a Nation of Readers) Reading with your child, no matter their age, is a fun way for them to become comfortable with language, reading and writing long before they can read or print a recognizable word. If you make reading as much a part of your daily routine as meals, playtime and hugs, your child will soak up information about language and reading while you create wonderful memories.
Tips for Encouraging Reading
- When reading a book with large print, point to the words as you read them. This helps young children understand that print has meaning, and it teaches children to read from left to right.
- Select books with rhyming words and lots of repetition. Encourage your child to join in whenever possible.
- Read that favorite book one more time!
- Schedule a reading time just like you schedule meals, naps and baths.
- Take books whenever you leave home.
- Make sure your child sees you enjoying reading.
